Hollister Ranch is a 13-mile stretch of coastline in Southern California, renowned for its surfing, including a dozen surf breaks within a six-mile stretch. It’s a 14,500-acre operating cattle ranch, subdivided into 100-acre plots, and governed by a strict set of CC&Rs. Some say the area is one of the last unspoiled surf spots on the California coast.
The ranch runs from Gaviota State Park to the Bixby Ranch, a private cattle ranch, and features points and reefs that face south. The area is exposed to the south and partially shaded by the Channel Islands, which can make swells smaller and more sensitive to tides. Unless you know a property owner and are invited to surf there, access is limited to the points and reefs along the westernmost tip of Point Conception, either legally by boating in—though this is not advised and done at your own risk—or illegally by walking in.
